ÉLAN MOTORSPORTS BUILDS 49th AND 50TH DP02 RACE CARS
Chassis Nos. 49 and 50 delivered to One Motorsports, which is fielding four DP02 race cars in the 2014 IMSA Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda Series
Braselton, Ga., May, ??, 2014 – Élan Motorsports Technologies reached a historic racing milestone in May when its motorsports craftsmen built and delivered the 50th Élan DP02 race car to Las Vegas-based One Motorsports, owned by Jeff Shafer and competing in the IMSA Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda Series with a four-car, four-driver team.
DP02 chassis no. 50 departed the Élan facility along with chassis no. 49 and both were delivered to One Motorsports drivers Todd Slusher and Lee Alexander in mid May.
The Élan DP02 is the exclusive chassis used in the series. It features a Mazda MZR 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine producing 240 horsepower at 8,000 rpm, sequential no-lift shift Hewland gearbox, independent double-wishbone suspension with fully adjustable shocks, and one-piece aluminum OZ Racing® wheels. It weighs just 1,175 pounds, delivers at least 700 pounds of downforce, and has a top track speed of 170 mph.
The DP02 chassis also has an outstanding safety record. It boasts a strong and safe structure that meets all FIA F3 crash test standards thanks to its unidirectional and woven carbon fiber and aluminum core construction and a full composite monocoque with integral fuel cell.
The One Motorsports team is new to the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda Series. Team owner and manager Shafer raced in U.S. and European open-wheel competitions in the 1990s and today runs Las Vegas-based Factory48 Motorsports. He achieved racing success under the Factory48 Motorsports banner in SCCA and Radical competition, most recently at the 2013 SCCA Runoffs at Road America where Alexander won the CSR national championship. Shafer and Alexander yearned for more and wanted to move to the next level, and Alexander helped drive the One Motorsports’ project.
“We felt we were ready to make a jump to the prototype lites series. So I started reaching out to talented drivers who I felt shared this desire,” Alexander said. “We very quickly pulled together the core and then spent many long hours hammering out the logistical details. At first we were going to run under Factory48, then opted to create an all-new presence under the One Motorsports umbrella.”
In addition to Alexander, the new team includes drivers John Falb, Tony Bullock and Todd Slusher, with Jim Shafer overseeing the management and ownership responsibilities. The new chassis nos. 49 and 50 race cars join Falb’s DP02 chassis no. 47. Falb and Bullock competed in both Race 1 and 2 at March 13-14 races at Sebring International Raceway. The weekend was a team success, with the highlight being Bullock’s fourth place finish driving a pre-owned DP02 chassis and just missing a podium by a mere 2.636 seconds.
Slusher and Alexander are busy preparing their respective cars for upcoming prototype lites races. Slusher is targeting the Grand Prix of Kansas event, June 6-7 while Alexander is setting is sites on the June 26-28 race at the historic Watkins Glen International circuit or the July 12-13 competition at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada.
